See The USS Milwaukee - UPDATE!
This morning (11/12/15), Mayor Mlada spoke by phone with Vice Admiral Dirk Debbink, USNR (ret.), Chairman of the USS Milwaukee Commissioning. There has been a change in the ship's arrival date off of our shores. Due to the weather pattern that settled in last night and will extend through tonight, Commander Bridgewater has made the decision to delay the departure of the USS Milwaukee by two days. As such, she is now scheduled to arrive off the mouth of our harbor on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. Safety of crew and ship is paramount, of course, and perhaps this is to our benefit, allowing more city and county residents to come out on Sunday morning! And, weather looks to be beautiful that day: 50s and sunny!

Coal Dock Park will offer a wonderful place to see the USS Milwaukee. In addition to the promenade, there are several elevated walkway platforms from which people can view her. If you intend to walk out to the north breakwater lighthouse, please watch your footing and be mindful of changing weather conditions. Plans are in place for a 21-gun salute and playing of Taps at the Wisconsin Pillar out on Coal Dock Park upon the ship's arrival. There will be no formal, extended program, just a simple and fitting gesture of honor to all our Veterans we celebrated on Veterans Day this week. We hope to have a good number of our local Veteran Heroes along the lakefront! Please thank and celebrate all those Veterans you see! And, please bring whatever you wish to show your patriotism and gratitude for those who have served and those who serve our great nation now. The crew will bring the USS Milwaukee to a dead stop about 100-200 yards off the mouth of our harbor (wave dependent). Commander Bridgewater hopes to have his crew take to the deck where they will be visible and can be appropriately saluted. From the distance they will be, they should be able to see signs, flags, etc. Patriotic kites may be flown on Coal Dock Park. Drones must not be flown in any proximity to the ship.

Additionally, Mayor Mlada and Vice Admiral Debbink have spoken of the possibility of having Commander Bridgewater and his crew sign an official photograph of the USS Milwaukee as she sits off our harbor. Mayor Mlada hopes to join Mayor Barrett and other city and county leaders in Milwaukee for the ship's arrival and will attempt to facilitate this signing. If we are able to make that happen, we hope to make a small version of the photograph available in some manner to our City of Port Washington residents and, most especially, our local Veteran Heroes. For additional information, including on where you can purchase the official USS Milwaukee Coat-of-Arms badge, please visit the USS Milwaukee Commissioning website at www.ussmilwaukeelcs5.org/. Let's give a very warm Port Washington welcome to this magnificent ship and the men and women who will serve her -- and us -- so gallantly. Hope to see you out on our lakefront on Sunday morning around 10:00 a.m.!

The USS Milwaukee will be making her way past our great City of Port Washington, proud home of Stars & Stripes Honor Flight. The current plan calls for the ship and her crew to arrive off the mouth of our harbor around 10:30 a.m. Depending upon weather conditions, Commander and Crew will try to get within a few hundred yards of our harbor and significantly reduce speed to allow for a period of time off our shores. Best places for viewing will be Coal Dock Park and the north breakwater. Please be aware of conditions that day in deciding upon where to view this magnificent ship! It will be the one time the USS Milwaukee will be in the Great Lakes as her crew takes her to her city namesake for a Commissioning Ceremony on November 21st and eventual stationing in San Diego.

Controlled Burn - Monday, April 13, 2015
As part of a continuous effort to manage the area’s native prairie and wetland habitat, We Energies is planning to conduct a prescribed burn of approximately 1.25 acres on the former south coal dock adjacent to the Port Washington Generating Station. The target date for the burn is Monday, April 13, between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., with a backup date of Tuesday, April 14. The actual date and time may vary depending on weather conditions and wind direction. To minimize smoke near business or residential properties, the burn will only occur if winds are out of the northwest, west, or southwest. Please note, the recreation trail in this area will be closed during the prescribed burn. Contact Mike Grisar, We Energies Principal Ecologist, at 414-588-8648 if you have questions or concerns about this activity.
